Highlights
The Turnout Water Measurement Program is part of the Newlands Project Water Conservation Plan, which has included projects related to measurement, canal modernization, operational strategy and resource planning, on-farm water management, and remote monitoring SCADA systems.
The Water Measurement Program began in 1997, when ITRC was asked to develop a volumetric measurement plan for Truckee-Carson Irrigation District (TCID) funded by the US Bureau of Reclamation, Mid-Pacific Region. This program was to develop and install documented and reasonably accurate turnout delivery measurement techniques in the district.
Using a modernization evaluation involving a holistic accounting of the current level of system performance and the cost-effectiveness of installing flow measurement devices, ITRC identified recommendations for TCID as part of an updated operational plan. ITRC identified several water management and hardware options, including:
- Automated control structures
- Communication systems
- Flow measurement devices
- Water level control options
- Recirculation facilities
